Divinity: Original Sin – a throwback to D&D classics

30 Sep

For the past several weeks I’ve been playing Divinity: Orginal Sin, a turn based, action RPG from Larian Studios available on Steam and GoG for PC. It’s an amazing game, harking back to the hay-days of Icewind Dale, Balder’s Gate, and Neverwinter Nights. It is what Dragon Age wished it could be.

High praise for a game that was partially funded through Kickstarter, right? It’s well earned. The developers raised one million dollars to create their game and I am disappointed I missed out on throwing them some cash. Every penny looks well spent and an update to the game was available soon after launch which added more than just a few minor bug fixes. Dye bottles, new companions, and crafting recipes tell me the developers aren’t done fleshing out the amazing world they’ve created.

Normally, this is where I would tell you all about the story line and how amazing it is. Trust me, the story is FANTASTIC, however Continue reading

First Impressions – Tera Online

11 Jun

A few months ago I lost my World of Warcraft, 2v2 Arena partner to Tera Online. The game was amazing! he said. It’s so pretty and the game play is so much fun! he said. It’s another WoW clone I don’t care about! I thought. Well, guess who ate their words last weekend? I’ll give you a hint: It wasn’t him.

Friday night I purchased and downloaded Tera Online, a new MMORPG by En Masse Entertainment that strives to give “true action combat” to players as well as give an active and interactive community. Currently a level 22 Sorcerer, I think they’ve succeeded, though I am tempering my enthusiasm for this game after the last half-successes of Rift and SW:ToR. I cannot give my full backing to Tera Online until I’ve seen the end game content, because an MMORPG is all about the end game content.

Story

The world of Tera Online is torn by war and strife. The Argons attack for no known reason and the armies of all the races have come together to keep them from destroying their world. Unfortunately, this has left the home front vulnerable to old enemies and new threats. Recently, an island has suddenly appeared off the coasts of the two continents, never before seen and holding its own powerful secrets.

In Before It’s Out: Game of Thrones (RPG)

Game of Thrones (RPG)

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m an Atlus fan girl. I have loved everything of theirs that I’ve ever gotten my hands on for its rich stories and realistic characters – even the ones who never speak. Yet, when it comes to the Game of Thrones phenomenon, I’ve been disinterested – after reading the first two books, the third stalled out and I never finished it, so the T.V. show never seemed like something I would enjoy.

Then I heard there was going to be a Game of Thrones RPG for the Xbox and the PS3. My first thought was someone was trying to cash in on the name for the sake of making some money. And then I heard that someone is Atlus. This caught my attention with an immediate reaction of, “Oh God, I have to have it!” I settled down after a few days and decided to do some research into just what I was going to be paying for; I was not impressed. The videos showed half-assed graphics and declared one of those “Play as four different characters” games which always suggests to me that they couldn’t come up with a good enough story to run with only one set of characters. At the time, they had only released two of the story zones and I was sorely disappointed.

Today, Atlus sent me an email telling me to take a first look at the combat for their Game of Thrones RPG. What the hell, I thought and pulled up the video. As the video wound down I was both surprised this was the same game and again excited to get my hands on it. Continue reading
